Our volunteer of the year became a volunteer in May, 2010. She is one of the hardest working people anywhere. When she volunteers she knows just what needs to be done and gets to it. She is a Level III Volunteer which means she has alot of horse experience and promotes the safety of our riders. The instructors love it when Deb volunteers for their classes because they feel confident in her abilities. The riders and their parents love her because she truly cares about them and their well-being. She does whatever she can to make Discovery Riders a better place for everyone. Thank you , Deb, for all you do for Discovery Riders. Congratulations on being selected as our Volunteer of the Year 2011.

Our Horse of the Year is Rox Starr. He came to Discovery Riders in March 2008, when we moved to to our present equine facility. He is one of the favorites of many who come to Discovery riders because of his beautiful black color. He is the king of the herd, but isn't a bully about it. Rox star doesn't like the farrier or the vet, but with patience he overcomes his fears of them. He is very sweet and takes care of his riders. Thank you, Rox Star, for all you do for our riders at Discovery Riders.

How can I help?

Putting people with special needs on horseback is challenging. It takes a few highly trained horses and a lot of carefully trained people. Safety is an inflexible goal. Dedicated volunteers assist our instructors, who are specially trained and certified through North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).

We need volunteers to walk next to the riders and to lead the horses. Knowledge of horses is helpful but not essential. What is more important is a willingness to be a consistent presence in the life of a person with disabilities. We ask our volunteers to serve one or two hours per week.

You can put a smile on somebody’s face

Discovery Riders is a therapeutic riding and learning experience for people with special challenges. We need volunteers to assist our expert instructors.
