DISCOVERY RIDERS, INC. PROGRAMMING 2012
- Equine Assisted Activities Program, formerly termed therapeutic riding, under the direction of our certified NARHA instructors is designed to meet the individualized needs of our participants including social, cognitive, physical and educational needs. There are six 6-week sessions annually, 1 hour class per week which commence every other month. Many participants are involved in more than one 6 week session. Each participant has a goal identified by the parent or caregiver. Progress is documented weekly. Outcomes are identified each six week session and evaluated whether they are met or not met. To offer six 6-week sessions per year for 40-50 participants per six week session. New sessions start the first week of Dec-Feb-April-June-Aug-Oct. Program cost $240 per 6 week session (1 hr. per week). Scholarships available.
- Discovery Riders Equine Assisted Activities Field Trips. Ground and classroom activities and/or riding instruction. The cost of a 1.5 hour session is $15 per student who does only table activities (no horse contact), $30 per student who does only equine assisted ground activities, $40 per student who rides and does equine assisted ground activities. Maximum of 8 students in a group for riding activities.
- Equine Assisted Mental Health Horse of a Different Color Program under the direction of our mental health professional in collaboration with a NARHA certified instructor. A group of 4 pre-adolescent girls or boys identified by referring agencies as having a major trauma in their lives. There is a Summer group that meets 1.5 hours per week for 6 weeks. Assists the girls and boys with processing trauma, building coping skills, relationship skills and a positive sense of self. Outcomes are identified and evaluated whether they are met or not met. Program cost $423/participant in a group of 4 for 1.5 hrs. per week times 6 weeks. Follow up sessions monthly highly recommended to promote continuity.
- Equine Assisted Mental Health Family Enhancement Program under the direction of our mental health professional in collaboration with a NARHA certified instructor. The two phase program involves the entire family, not to exceed 4. Phase I includes only the parents or caregivers and starts with an intake assessment. Goals are identified and a treatment plan is tailored to meet the identified goals. Meets once per week for 2 hours for four weeks. Phase II starts with an intake assessment of the children who are included in the session and meets 2 hours once per week for four weeks. Using our herd of eight horses who each have a unique history and personality enriches the process. Participants learn from them as a herd or family and from each horse individually. Program effectiveness is evaluated by outcome measurement. Program cost $2,560 per family for 8 weeks.
- Modified Family Enhancement Program under the direction of a certified NARHA Instructor in collaboration with a mental health professional. The six week session is conducted one hour per week, the last class 1.5 hrs. The curriculum consists of team building and promoting effective communication between the parent and the child. Cost is $360 per family. Up to 2 families may attend the same class.
- The Assisted Volunteer program is offered to former program participants who would like to continue in some capacity at our equine facility. Faced with a variety of challenges, these higher functioning individuals can volunteer their time at the farm under direct supervision of staff or a trained volunteer. They have a task list to choose from and document what they complete during their volunteer time. To offer programming to up to 6 individuals throughout the year. No program charge.
- Our Family Volunteer program is offered to families who have applied for and receive scholarship funding through Discovery Riders. Many who can’t afford the program financially appreciate the opportunity to give back in some capacity to Discovery Riders. Programming offered to any family who would like to participate. No program charge.
- School age Community Service Volunteers supervised by Logan County court staff and Discovery Rider staff work at the equine center 3-6 hours a week. Cost is $40/hr. for the group covered by scholarship funding.
- Silver Saddles Program for Seniors 55 years of age and older equine assisted activities classes. Pre and post balance assessment conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the riding program. One hour per week for 6 weeks. $20/hr./rider $20/hr. scholarship. Full scholarships available.
- Equine Assisted Physical Therapy under the direction of a physical therapist. Medically billable interventions. Medical billing completed by physical therapist. Equine related costs including the horse, facility and volunteers are $35/30 minute session. Scholarship funding available.
